Canon D1/D1s

February 11th, 2007

Unfortunatly I didn’t grab the text before it was removed, but according to Erwin Canon is going to be releasing replacements for both the 1D and 1Ds models. I don’t think that this is a surprise to anyone, but his predictions are as follows.

“Canon EOS D1
- 12.8 MP Sensor with DIGIC III
- Full Frame
- Weather sealed body
- Ability to write unlimited continuous JPEG at full frame rates as long as the memory card transfer rate is fast enough.
- New ISO 6400
- Expected price $4500 US dollars and will be cheaper than the Leica M8

Canon EOS D1s
- 22 MP sensor with DIGIC III
- Full Frame
- Should directly compete with Medium format

The elimination of 1.3x sensor seems reasonable, Chuck Westfall has aluded to as much in the past. It was hard to tell if his switching of D1/1D was a typo or not since he seemed to go back and forth. I’m leaning towards typo, seeing as Nikon had a D1 model years ago.

Interesting 1DsIII/40d rumor

February 5th, 2007

Some more rumors about the 1Ds Mark III and 40d. 22 mega pixel is pretty old news now, as well as the full color sensor rumor. A full color sensor in the 40d would be a big surprise; it would certainly give Canon some breathing room against the competition. If they do go this route I hope they can overcome the noise problem Sigma has had, that’s been a point of pride for Canon’s CMOS sensors.

I’m not sure what the purpose of switching aspect ratios would be. This seems like something could just as easily be done in software, without the need for special “supported” lenses. It would only make sense if they were planning a high speed crop mode like Nikon, but then they are cutting into their 1D market. It should be an interesting PMA, that’s for sure.

Bad news for the Pentax 645D

February 3rd, 2007

It looks like my dreams have been dashed already. According to an interview in swiss magazine photointern the Pentax 645D is being delayed in favor of other DSLRs.
Source: www.dpreview.com

On the bright side, there could be some updates to the existing Pentax DSLR lineup as well as a new body.

“E-410. I think this will be what the E-400 was supposed to be. Grossly
the same as the E-400 but with Live preview (don’t know about A and/or
B)
E-510. Follow up of the E-500 Live preview and in-body image
stabilisation
E-x. Finally. Unknow if this will be at PMA to view or even handle.
Available from july/august. Faster AF, More AF points (maybe 12-14), 5-6
fps and larger buffer. Live preview with more robust screen. in-body
Image stabilisation. at least 10mpix. Different sensor than that of the
E-400 however. Nothing known about noise or body size. Would be nice if
the size stays the same. E-1 handling will be continued in this body.”

Humourous 1D mockup

February 1st, 2007

This is pretty old and comes out every couple of years. I thought I’d post it again for anyone who hasn’t seen it. My favorite part is the “call Spock” dial. I think it’s originally from www.dpreview.com

Another one for the 1DSIII column

January 31st, 2007

Here’s another little tidbit on the 1DSIII, but I think it deserves a grain or two of salt. I can believe 22 megapixel, but half the body size? The only way this makes sense to me is if there was a removable battery grip. I also can’t see a new lens mount, EF-S is a relatively new addition to the digital world.

“The last shoot had a Canon rep come by with the new 22MP digi demo body. It is half the size of the 1Ds Mark II. They said they are hustling to make lenses that will work with what this body can resolve. They may even make a new mount again for an entirely new lens design. It won’t be out before Phot Show East.”

Pentax 645D round up

January 30th, 2007

Pentax 645D
This isn’t so much a rumor as a wish, but I’m hoping Pentax will give us some more information on the previously announced 645d. I’m curious about the upgradeable sensor, will this be a user replaceable part? I’m also not sure what the recent merger with Hoya means for the 645d, hopefully it hasn’t been scrapped.

New Lens from Canon?? - EF 800mm f/5.6 DO IS USM - you be the judge

January 29th, 2007

According to the graphic on this site EF800mmf/5.6 DO IS USM there is a new lens coming from Canon. This is likely a fake…

BobAtkins.com points out there are a number of possible mistakes in the ad.
EF8005.6

[01/22/07] - There’s an image supposedly grabbed from the Canon UK website of an 800mm f5.6 DO USM lens. There are a few problems though. If you look at the URL and the “breadcrumbs” trail, you’ll see one references the “fixed focal length” directory and the other references the “Image Stabilized Lenses” directory. On the real site for other lenses the URL and breadcrumbs match. Also the word “difractive” and “incorperates” are mis-spelled and the final sentence of the description makes no grammatical sense. The URL is also inconsistent with other lenses in that it puts a period in the aperture (i.e. 5.6), whereas other lenses like the 400/2.8 has a URL with no period in the aperture (i.e. 28), So the URL for this lens contains “_f5.6DOIS_”, whereas the URL for the 400/2.8 contains the string “_f28DOIS_”

So either it’s a pretty good, but imperfect fake or Canon need to hire better proof readers for their website and sort out the problems with their breadcrumbs and URLs!

Confirmation of the Canon 40d?

January 24th, 2007

Looks like someone slipped up. Here’s first “offical” referrence to the 40d model number. No real information is available yet but it’s a little bit of validation.

More Canon news

January 24th, 2007

This time from www.fredmiranda.com

Summarising the previous post Canon was going to replace all their DSLR range in 2007 except for the 400D. There would be:

30D Replacement (40D?) with
• Anti-dust
• 5D like AF
• 10.2mp 4 channel sensor (though they were testing a 12 mp one)
• Still 1.6 crop for those EF-S lenses
• DIGIC III and sensor changes to give better high ISO and lower noise (especially at 1600 and 3200 ISO)
• Very similar appearance to 30D

5D would be split into FF two lines to create full frame demand
• Low end – similar to current 12 Mp sensor but with a more 30D like body (could be a 7D?) and DIGIC III. This low end and xxD series were meant to provide a more cost effective choice between 1.6 and FF for the advance amateur and allow a gradual migration to more full frame over time driven by the market.
• High end with more MP (16mp but not the 1D sensor), improved AF for the full frame, DIGIC III etc. (could be a 3D?)
